INSIGHTS 225 — WHO TAKES OVER THE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS?

Advisor's vault doorThe President leaned back in his chair with his cigarette and The Advisor in front of him and relaxed. He wasn’t a simple man but he enjoyed simple things. Visiting with the old man in the subterranean passageways under the White House gave him a chance to drop all the role-playing he had to do on a never-ending booking of stages. Most of the causes he spoke about didn’t interest him and the audiences certainly didn’t. Down here he felt safe. Not from any physical danger. He was safe from danger everywhere but from pretension of the sycophants and those just wanting face time, he was only safe in this underground chamber. He doubted if the old man even thought about pushing his own agenda, if he even had one. This was the only place where he really felt he was part of a long line of historical figures who at one time sat at the big desk in the Oval Office. No matter what he said here, there was no danger of any leaks. This might be the only place in the whole damn government where that statement was true.

The Advisor could see the President was deep in some thought and waited before asking him a question that he would not have even hinted at earlier in their relationship. But now he felt their relationship had changed and the President wouldn’t take offense. He topped off the President’s coffee cup and said, “You said last time it was critical that someone would follow you who could carry on your mission of transforming America and the world. Everyone thinks your former rival will be that person. Do you?”

“Not anymore. Knowing what I know now, I should have never put her at the State Department as long as her family foundation was tangled in foreign money-making projects. The temptation of the big amounts of cash must have been too strong. Without the foundation business, she wouldn’t have needed a private email server in her house. I think she is the only member of my Cabinet who broke clear federal laws by using private email channels for government business. It’s reached the point where I might have to let the FBI and Justice Department investigate the matter. The media really won’t really pick up the investigation. They are all far too partisan. Remember how they investigated the Watergate Affair? Here, I have to point out that it wasn’t the FBI or the Attorney General who forced Nixon’s retirement. Not even Congress seems to recognize that presidents don’t investigate themselves or their employees.

“To answer your question: No, I don’t think she will get the nomination. Just too much baggage. I need someone who can get elected and then, at least, hold back the conservative drive to terminate all the programs I put in place until another progressive revolutionary wins the White House and the task of transforming America into a socialist nation is completed. I’ve taken the transformation process about as far as I can.”

“Mr. President, I think the transformation benchmarks achieved during your administration will be the legacy historians write about. Thank you.”

“Talking to you does help me. I’ll be back in a week or so. Goodnight.”

INSIGHTS 224 — THE ADVISOR ASKS THE PRESIDENT WHY DOESN’T HE GOVERN?

Advisor's vault doorIt was late at night when the President stopped in to talk with the Advisor. The Advisor thought as he sat down, He has put up with my pointed questions on our last several meetings. If he is still willing to talk about what I think must be touchy areas for him, I might as well push a little harder.

The Advisor said, “Mr. President, I have two basic areas I would like to hear you talk about. Are you okay to continue with my questions? It is not often anyone gets to really talk to a president about controversial subjects. You are a very different kind of president.”

The President nodded as he lit up a cigarette. The Advisor asked, “Mr. President, I often hear your critics asking things like, ‘Why doesn’t he govern? He doesn’t seem able to solve any problems. He just talks and never fixes anything. In fact, he often makes any problem worse by his rhetoric.’ How would you answer these complaints?”

The President laughed and said, “They just don’t understand. I’m not trying to solve problems to make their lives better or to maintain or increase American economic or military power. I’m doing just the reverse and my critics, especially those professional politicians in Congress, do not have a clue. They are still playing a game that no longer exists. But it’s the only one they know, so they keep playing the same cards over and over again and expect different results. What is that type of thinking called? It is called insane. They are so predictable it takes what little challenge they might have to my authority meaningless.

“I focus on the issues, whatever they are, and will take any position that increases my ability to use the issue to weaken the opposing side. They don’t seem to have a clue to what is happening. I’m well on the way to bringing this bastion of capitalism and individual freedom to a socialist economic and political system of government, one to the left of the European model, and the professional politicians believe I’m just a poor leader. An unfair description because I’m not even trying to be a leader. Here is progress in my plan,” the President said, putting his cigarette in the ashtray and counting off on his fingers. “Increase the debt to intolerable levels, raise taxes to destroy capitalism, if you can’t keep or use what you earn as a greedy business person, why struggle, increase numbers of people dependent on government, take over industry by regulation, control education, banking, the medical system, and make international law into the American justice system.

“Name anyone of my executive departments and I’ll show you an inept, by past standards, group of officials that can’t seem to get anything done right. There are no traditional accomplishments to point to. My slogan is that ‘worse is better.’ The IRS, EPA, DHS, HHS, VA and all the other departments of my executive look like bumbling fools. And some of them are. Some know or suspect my plan, others are just incompetent and that is good. Their job, whether they know it or not, is to make things so bad that socialist policies will look good and be embraced by the population.

“If I had four more years, I could complete the job. This two-term limit is very difficult to get around. The person who follows me must be a true believer, like Hillary, or just a natural bumbler like the rest. Hillary is a true believer, even more than I, in the Alinsky doctrine. Unfortunately, her Clinton money genes are rapidly making her unelectable. May have to do something about that. I should have told you my time for this visit was short. I have to go now. I’m not finished yet. I’ll be back.”

When the President left, the Advisor said, out loud, “This man is really dangerous and I can’t even tell anyone. He knows that. Otherwise he wouldn’t be so candid. I doubt the people in the future whlo read my journals will believe I’ve accurately reported this meeting.”

INSIGHTS 212 — THE ADVISOR AND THE PRESIDENT’S “HIDDEN’ LEGACY

Advisor's vault door

The Advisor wasn’t pleased with the way The Council controlled and published his essays. They took far too much time to publish them and many had been censored or slightly rewritten. At times, they said, his essays were so unique that people would wonder about the sources of the essays. The title under which The Council published his essays had grown upon him. EIGHT DECADES OF INSIGHTS wasn’t bad and the web page was very well done. It came right up when he Googled it. The pages of the website made it sound as if a group of elderly scholars sitting around a gentleman’s club had pooled their collective wisdom and published it for the benefit of the American people. The images used called up the deep roots of American history and their fierce rallying around the banner of freedom. Actually, it was better than he could have done. If only they weren’t so fearful and bureaucratic.

He busied himself with tidying up and getting ready for the president’s sudden notice that he would come down after ten o’clock tonight. At ten he heard the coffee finish brewing and a few minutes later his screen showed the president and Chris, his Secret Service escort, coming down the subterranean passageway. Like most people, the president was a creature of habit. He always sat in the same chair, pulled the ashtray a bit closer, and lit his cigarette with the same series of  steps, the tapping of the pack to get a single cigarette to pop out of the pack, a few quick taps of the cigarette’s tobacco end, a strike of the wooden matches he liked to use, and the deep satisfied inhale of the blessed nicotine-filled smoke. Only then was he prepared to talk.

“Tonight, I want to go over my accomplishments going into my last phase of the presidency. I know nothing I say will leak out of here, unlike my above-ground world where everyone is thinking ‘spin and leak.’ My first goal was to seize as much of the economy as I could from the private sector and bring it under the control of the central government. The first big move was the Affordable Care Act where I brought nearly 7 or 8 percent of the economy under government control. I chose Cabinet officers who would follow my lead without question and begin to craft and disseminated a deluge of regulations to destroy capitalism and the free market. Nothing as big as my health care move but perhaps more effective due to the incremental steps of agencies like the EPA, Treasury, the IRS, and Energy.

“Most of my moves went unnoticed by most but they have been very effective in inhibiting national energy production. The constant delay of the Keystone Pipeline, even against the wishes of organized labor, has sent a clear message. Now we have to kill the recent surge of natural gas and oil, through fracking and drilling in privately owned land. I don’t want the United States to become energy self-sufficient. Nor do I want to use America’s potential to be a major exporter of natural gas, gasoline or crude oil be used to further American nationalistic foreign policy objectives. I want to end Western domination and change the existing world order. Iran and Russia are pleased and the Sunni old world order is very unhappy. Good!

“My efforts to further spread America’s wealth through international agreements on climate change and international trade agreements needs more pushing but they are progressing. Both of these measures will enhance the strength of the United Nations and world law. I will continue in the next year to support Iran, China, Russia, and Cuba in ways that level the world playing field and re-distribute wealth.

“The last, large, and most important step in diminishing America’s power to project selfish nationalistic goals is still incomplete. Even though I have severely weakened the American military, it is still far too strong. In what’s left of my tenure, I will continue to weaken America’s military so that they cannot do anymore evil in the world.

“You have been very quiet. Any comments?”

“No, Mr. President. I believe you are aware that your goals are unique for an American president in our history.”

“Yes, I am and am proud to be doing what so many have neglected. I’ll be happy to discuss this with you next week. Now I have to go.”

“Goodnight, Mr. President.”

INSIGHTS 206 — THE PRESIDENT TALKS TO THE ADVISOR ABOUT AMERICA

Advisor's vault door

The president smiled and said to Chris, his Secret Service escort, “I can’t wait to tell this guy what is really going on. He must belong to some old geezer cult to be willing to spend his last days underground. Or maybe he is just on the last stage before he really goes underground.” The president grinned at his witticism and so did Chris, but his grin was faked. His thoughts were real: What was I thinking when I volunteered to take a bullet for this man? I truly don’t think he really cares about anyone.

The president put his palm on the ancient iron door and as it swung open, he was greeted by the Advisor who escorted him to the conference table and poured the coffee brewed to the president’s taste.

“I know I said I would give you the thinking that has led to my domestic policies, but would you mind asking me a question or two so I can fill in the gaps in your understanding?”

“Of course not, Mr. President. What are your core beliefs about America?”

“Going right for the hard stuff, are you? Okay, that’s a good place to start. I hope you realize that I can speak without reading from a teleprompter. Some people doubt I can. I have a very objective view of America for I did not grow up in America so I wasn’t brainwashed by years of propaganda from kindergarten through high school. With what my parents and their friends told me, I was able to see through all the hysterical ranting of the bigoted conservative American politicians about the greatness of America and its role as a ‘shining city on a hill’. The truth is that the world today would be a lot better if America never existed. You see, the real vision of America is that of a ‘polluted city on a hill’ churning out products to make the rich richer. The people making those products they cannot afford, can’t even feed or clothe their families.

“The populous ‘have-not class’ in American society is doomed to remain there and the middle class is conditioned to recognize their proper place to keep from falling into the lower class. Your churches, schools, and capitalist organizations all preach a philosophy that ensures the stability of the status quo. There is no free market and capitalism is the chain that holds this nation stagnant. Your history is shameful.

“From the very start, the colonists put property over people and the individual rights of the rich founders above the rights of the masses. Your wars from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, to the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East have all been to gain economic power and further riches for the one percent. Let’s not forget the slave labor that built your economy and is today still second-class citizens oppressed by the police and confined to ghettoes in the big cities. How can you be proud of that heritage?

“I have laid the groundwork to destroy what I inherited. If I had another eight years this nation would be an example of fairness to all. Where everyone would have a fair shot and the playing field would be at last level. There would only be one class: the one hundred percenters. My only problem has been to get all the old Democrats to recognize my goals and to help me achieve them. In the future this nation will take its law and guidance from the United Nations.

“Tell you what, the next time I come to see you, I’ll listen to your response. Now I have to go. My wife thinks I’m in the gym or sneaking a smoke.”

“Goodnight Mr. President,” the Advisor said to a closing door. He muttered to himself, “Did I just hear what I heard?”

INSIGHTS 205 — THE PRESIDENT LECTURES THE ADVISOR

Advisor's vault door

As the President walked with Chris, the Secret Service chief of his detail, he was anxious for the chance to put the Advisor straight. For all his cultured ways and knowledge, the Advisor is living in a different world, the president thought. He is no revolutionary. He might be black but he doesn’t understand how American blacks are truly the victims of capitalism, colonialism, and white supremacy. Left to people like him, blacks would still be second-class citizens. My mission is to not only transform America but to fix it so that it will never be a world power again. Capitalism, the free market, individual rights and freedoms, and the two-party system will be replaced by a progressive elite that knows better than the masses what the people need. The last thing I do will be to weld this damned old iron door shut with the so-called Advisor inside.

Chris said, “Mr. President, we are here.”

“Yes. I won’t be long.”

The President pressed his right palm against the copper plate and the door slowly opened without a sound. The president wondered, how does this door move so quietly? The old man must have a daily schedule to lubricate the hinges. I’ll give him credit . Everything he does is impeccable. His manners are so correct they piss me off. Somewhere he learned the fine art of brewing outstanding coffee. Damn recipe probably extends back to the days of the founders. He may revere them but I surely don’t. Their system of government was designed to protect property and enable the rich a way to become richer and more powerful, thereby perpetuating the class system.

“Good evening, Mr. President. I’m anxious to hear your response to our last session. If you will take a seat, I’ll pour you a cup of my special blend. It is not much different. But it does have a deeper aroma and a pleasant after taste.”

The President put his nicotine gum in the waste basket and lit up a real cigarette. “It is almost worth coming here just to have your coffee with a cigarette and with no one looking at me at me for smoking. A president has to have a few personal perks. I tell you, I have precious few. Between my wife, my main above-ground advisor, and a bunch of whining bureaucrats, I don’t have much free time. Playing golf, coming here, and speaking at fundraisers are my only getaways.

“I take issue with your comments from last week. No matter what happens after my transformation process, America and the existing world order will never be the same. The world will be a much better place for all but the current rich and powerful. They, along, with the twin evils of capitalism and individual freedoms, will be gone. And so will all the complicated self-serving alliances, treaties, and subtle forms of modern colonialism. Both on the national and international stages the principle of ‘to each according to need and from each according to ability’ will govern. There is not a better guiding theme in any religion or governing scheme.

“I favor Islam for its no-nonsense legal system of Sharia law and its historical hatred of capitalism and all things Western. The religions of the West all support western political goals and objectives. Just look at the death and destruction the Crusades caused. From within Islam I’m a supporter of the great civilizations of the Persian Empires. They embrace the Shiite form of Islam rather than the radical and harsh Sunni version of Islam. Also, the Sunnis have sided with the West, especially America, and that is not good.

“I want the Iranians to have nuclear weapons. The world playing field needs to be leveled and the West has told us for decades that ‘Mutual Assured Destruction’ is a peaceful principle. For when everyone has the bomb, no one will use it. If they do use it, my transformation of the world order will still take place. A new and more just world will rise from the ashes of the past.”

The room grew silent. The Advisor sat quietly. Finally, the president said, “I’m through. Any comments?”

“Yes. One main one. Your goal is not new. Others have tried Marx’s principle. All have ended up in mass deaths, prison camps, and rule by an elite that quickly takes the riches and prerogatives of the wealthy class they replaced. What has ended up are inefficient governing models, a shrinking of economic growth, a harsh and stagnant rule by a group that is not elite but only serves the people in power with no checks on their rule. Individual freedoms, hopes, social mobility are gone. What remains is not a beautiful, better world but an ugly totalitarian rule by believers in a utopia that does not exist and never will.”

“I didn’t think you would understand.”

“On the contrary, I understand all too well.”

“At least you are honest. I’ll come back because I want to tell you about the next two years on the domestic front.”

The president signaled for Chris, drained his cup, and walked to the door. Over his shoulder the president said, “You might not know it but the weather outside is beautiful, gardens are blooming, beautiful women are walking the streets, the rain is soft and warm, it is a real delight to wander around my Rose Garden. You should try it sometime.”

“Thank you, Mr. President, but my place is here as long as I can physically do my duty. I look forward to our next visit.”
